A walk through Salsomaggiore

The main symbol of the town is the Salsomaggiore Terme. This wonderful building in the Liberty style was designed by the architect Ugo Giusti and the artist Galileo Chini.
The Grand Hotel of Thermes, the best known hotel of Salsomaggiore, dates from the early twentieth century and is today used as a conference centre. Many a celebrity spent the night here: Queen Margherita of Savoy, the poet Gabriele d'Annunzio, the tenor Caruso and the actress Eleonora Duse.
When you visit this hotel, you should certainly have a look at the Caryatids room and the Moresco. These rooms are decorated in the Liberty and Deco styles.

Another place worth visiting is the Palazzina Warowland near Berzieri Spa. It was built in the Lombard style and is now used as a tourist information centre.

Mazzini Park: this is the main park of Salsomaggiore, where you can admire sequoias, ginkos, cedars, yews and maple trees. There is also a small pond, inspired by oriental traditions (see photo), a wooden bridge and a kiosk.

If you intend to explore the surroundings of Salsomaggiore, you should certainly visit the castles and the Stirone River Park.

Climate

The climate in the region is characterised by mild winters and long summers with a stable temperature. Since it is hardly ever cold but not too hot either, the region is ideal for sporting trips. The golf climate in Salsomaggiore is always agreeable.

History of Salsomaggiore

Salsomaggiore was already known in Celtic and Roman times for its salt extraction from the spring water. The first written document which mentions the place dates back to 798. The document described how the emperor Charlemagne gave the people the right to extract salt from the springs. During the Middle Ages, Salsomaggiore was ruled by the Pallavicino family. After several conflicts, it was annexed by the Duke of Parma and Piacenza.

In 1839, Doctor Lorenzo Berzieri was the first to realise the therapeutic powers of the springs of Salsomaggiore.
